I don't think many of you know but recently I had lots of problem with Sprint and getting sick of their customer service so decide to ditch Sprint even though I get dirt cheap plan from them. I can't believe how they treat their customer especially when the call me a long time royal customer (I've been with Sprint 8 years now). Anyway, maybe i'll write about their crappy service next time.
My heart is set on iPhone and will get iPhone within a week or so, but before I completely switch over I'd thought about give a chance to G1.
1. Experience at T-Mobile store
Unlike a Sprint store, as soon as I walk in a sales rep. greeted me and directed me to G1 and gave me a time to play with it. I wasn't really planning to walk away with one but after talking to him a bit, I decided to give a T-Mobile and G1 a shot. I wasn't familiar get things done and my questions answered so promptly I did not know what to say. There were three color options; Black, Bronze, and White. I picked up white, after all the paper work and payment stuff are done, I was able to walk out with new phone and new service within 30 minutes. All I can say is, it was a very pleasant visit.
2. Initial impression of G1
Very well designed, looks nice, and kinda bulky. I really liked the combination of touch screen and a track ball, the best of the world combined together (iPhone/Treo + Black Berry). I liked big screen, option of actual physical keyboards, and how smooth the phone runs.
3. What's in the Box?
Very simple and nice packaging. It comes with a manual, device, battery, power adaptor, usb sync cable, carrying case, a pair of ear phones, and usb to 3.5mm cable with microphone. I was little disappointed at no physical 3.5mm port but this usb to 3.5mm cable idea isn't bad at all. As long as it works and can get replacement.
4. Look & Feel
This is very subjective and personal preference. So I'm only speaking behalf of me.
Whoever designed this phone did a great job of thought through this; almost near perfect. As I mentioned a bit earlier I loved the combination of touch screen and a track ball. It looks good, feels good on hand, and the chin part (the part that curved up) that I don’t really like helps to grab comfortably one hand and navigate or use it without slide out keyboard and doesn’t look bad either. This helping chin part becomes disaster when I use keyboard. I do not have abnormally longer right thumb than left thumb. Also too used to with Palm Treo keyboards won’t help the matter either. The biggest complain I have towards to keyboard is “Hard to see in the dark”. Yes it lights up, but somehow alternate keys are almost impossible to see it.
5. OS
Very well put together. Pretty smooth, easy to learn, and seems like don’t have much problem. I only used it for two days now, so it is hard to tell. Few things I hope to change is on screen keyboard so I can use one hand if it is needed, a way to completely close a program, and a way to switch between programs other than go to home screen every time. Number of Softwares that are available at marketplace is very small too. I’m wondering if there’s other way to browse and purchase.
6. Conclusion.
Most likely I have to let it go due to lack of 3G support and not so good reception and my house and work place. Just in two days, I’ve grown into really like this phone. I know this is the first generation and I can see a very bright future of this OS. Just few things here and there I think it’ll be a great device and almost irresistible.
After using few more days I’ll also write about pros and cons. Right now things that I’m still not used to with the phone and know it can be better as time goes.
